The purpose of this grant scheme is to assist householders in rural areas that are dependent on a private water supply (individual well) for their household use, by financially assisting them where they incur capital expenditure, to carry out improvements to the supply to ensure that the water supply is wholesome and clean, or that the quantity supplied is insufficient to meet the domestic needs of the household as defined in the Housing (Private Water Supply Financial Assistance) Regulations 2020 (S.I. No. 192 of 2020).For grant purposes, a private water supply is defined as a system providing a supply of water to a single house by means of a source that is not common or shared.
Who can apply?
You can apply for this grant if you meet these conditions:
- The water supply in your home does not meet the required quality standards, or the quantity of water supplied is not good enough to meet the needs of your household.
- The home where the work is going to be carried out is where you normally live.
- You cannot connect your home to Uisce Éireann or a group water scheme.
- The house is not located in an area that is, or is about to be, served by Uisce Eireann or a Group Water Scheme.
- Your home was built at least 7 years ago, and a grant to provide or improve the water supply to your home has not been paid in the past 7 years.
- Holiday homes are not eligible for a grant under this scheme.
The key features of the scheme are:
- the grant payable for rehabilitation works is 85% of approved costs subject to a maximum of 3,000 euro
- the grant payable for the provision of a new well is 85% of approved costs subject to a maximum of 5,000 euro, where the housing authority agrees that this is the most appropriate solution
- in recognising the role of the grant in improving water quality, the water quality treatment element (typically filtration and Ultra Violet treatment) qualifies for 100% funding up to a maximum of 1,000 euro. This can be claimed on its own or in addition to either the grant for rehabilitation works or the grant for a new well
- the minimum grant threshold is 750 euro
Well owners can assess whether their wells are at risk in less than 10 minutes using a ‘Protect your Well’ assessment app available from the EPA website. It provides well owners with tailored advice on how they can reduce the risk of contamination in their well.
