Community Climate Action Programme – South Dublin County Council

Over €1.2 million allocated to 27 community climate projects under the Community Climate Action Programme

Allocation will support a variety of community organisations in areas such as energy, waste, food and transport.

South Dublin County Council is delighted to announce that 27 projects have been awarded funding totalling €1,202,599.87 through Strand 1 of the Community Climate Action Programme. This second round of funding under the programme will support a range of local community organisations, from addiction services centres to social enterprises that grow local food, to community centres at the heart of their communities to women’s collectives. The funding supports climate action that has real impact.

Work will include installing renewable energy sources like solar panels, making electricity use greener. The insulation of buildings to make them warmer is also featured, reducing the use of greenhouse gas creating fuels like oil and gas. Other projects focus on reducing food waste and increasing local food production, reducing the climate impact of our food systems, as well as the development of local green spaces. Projects also seek to promote active travel, by providing parking facilities for bikes and scooters, thus encouraging alternative journeys to those made by car.

With funding coming from the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, this second round of projects will build on the first phase, which has seen 26 community projects deliver climate actions worth over €1.1 million. As South Dublin County Council work towards the 2030 targets in our Climate Action Plan 2024-2029, these local community projects form a crucial part of the ongoing response.

Director of Climate Action for South Dublin County Council Teresa Walsh said:

“Communities are at the heart of climate action. The strong interest in phase 2 of the programme is emblematic of the fact that people want to do more. South Dublin County Council welcome the continued funding commitment by Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, and Transport, Darragh O'Brien and we look forward to supporting the successful groups with their climate action projects throughout delivery”.
