As it is SDG Week 2026, SDCC would like to shine a light on the successful Community Leaf and Green Waste Composting Pilot Programme being carried out across five South Dublin County locations during Summer and Autumn 2026.

Volunteers from nine Tidy Towns and Community Groups attended a series of in-person seminars and practical workshops, gaining valuable hands-on experience in:

🍂 Setting up community composting systems 🪱 Establishing wormeries for organic waste management 🌱 Creating leaf mould cages 🪧 Installing educational signage 🌿 Managing landscape waste using sustainable, nature-based solutions

♻️ Creating valuable nutrient-rich compost, vermicompost and leaf mould resource

The SDCC Composting Pilot supports:

🏘️ SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities ♻️ SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production 🌍 SDG 13: Climate Action 🌊 SDG 14: Life Below Water

By keeping green waste local and transforming it into valuable nutrient-rich compost, vermicompost and leaf mould, communities are helping to reduce waste, lower emissions, embrace sustainable practices and protect the environment. The materials produced through the programme will be used in 2027 to support local planting projects, contributing to SDCC's Circular Economy and Sustainability objectives.
