Launch of Safe Routes to School Projects in Old Bawn, Tallaght
SDCC Officially Opens Safe Routes to School Projects in Old Bawn, Tallaght
SDCC is pleased to announce the official opening of two Safe Routes to School projects at Scoil Maelruain and St Dominic’s National School in Old Bawn, Tallaght.
At Scoil Maelruain, a new School Street on Old Bawn Avenue has been introduced. The scheme includes restricted vehicle access at the cul-de-sac, raised zebra crossings, resurfaced footpaths designed for safe walking and wheeling, pencil-style bollards, and colourful road markings. These improvements aim to enhance safety during school drop-off and collection times while encouraging students and caregivers to walk or cycle to school.
At St Dominic’s National School, a new School Zone on Mountain Park features raised zebra crossings—including one providing safer access to St Dominic’s Shopping Centre—upgraded footpaths for improved accessibility, decorative railings with pencil motifs, pencil bollards, and distinctive road markings to clearly identify the school zone. This initiative is intended to improve safety and visibility around the school and promote active, sustainable travel.
Additionally, SDCC highlights the nearby Avonbeg Road Cycle Scheme, completed in 2022, which transformed part of the existing roadway into a community plaza with seating and a striking mural. This space is now well used by the local community.
These projects demonstrate SDCC’s ongoing commitment to road safety, active travel, and enhancing public spaces across the county.
