National Day of Action for PPT’s & Scramblers

This Wednesday 12th is National Day of Action for Powered Personal Transporters, (PPT’s) & Scramblers

As part of National Day of Action for Powered Personal Transporters (PPT’S) & Scramblers, South Dublin County Council (SDCC) is happy to launch their campaign in support with our colleagues in An Garda Síochana (AGS) this Wednesday 12th August, 2026, in raising awareness on PPT’s and Scramblers. This Multi-Agency event is aimed at educating the public on the  ‘Safe Use of E-Scooters & Scramblers’ through SDCC & AGS Social Media channels, SDCC Libraries and SDCC & AGS pubic areas.

Did you Know?

• E-Scooter riders cannot use the footpath
• Must use the road
• Motorists should give at least 1 metre clearance when overtaking an E-Scooter in speed zones that are 50km/h or under and at least 1.5 metres in speed zones over 50km/h

• Scramblers are Not a Toy
• Scramblers are Not suitable for the road
• Grace’s Law – allows Gardai to seize your vehicle

Mayor of South Dublin Cllr Francis Timmons said ‘‘I am delighted to be supporting this very important Road Safety campaign along with our colleagues in An Garda Síochana ‘ National Day of Enforcement for Personal Powered Transporters & Scramblers’   Every time you ride your E- scooters , remember you are a Vulnerable Road User and must obey the Rules of the Road in relation to E- scooters and Scramblers.  Don’t put yourself or other vulnerable road users at risk, particularly pedestrians that may be using the foot path, where E- scooters & Scramblers are not allowed."

Road Safety Officer at South Dublin County Council Orlaith Maguiresaid ‘the campaign is aimed at raising awareness about the responsibilities both of E-scooter riders, drivers of cars, trucks and all other road users who share the road with them, by promoting protective equipment, responsible speed, increased visibility, mutual respect on the road, we can adapt and change driver/ ppt’s riders behaviour to reflect a safer road user”. To date 115 people have lost their lives on Irish roads, which includes 4 E -Scooter/ E Bike riders. Scrambler drivers are reminded that Scramblers are for off road use only.  Since the 3rdApril, 2026 under Grace’s Law, you may only use a scrambler on land if you are the owner/ occupier or with the written consent of the landowner. Inspector Michael Houlihan, Garda National Roads Policing Bureau said ‘An Garda Síochana is delighted to work alongside and support South Dublin County Council on this National Day of Action through multi-agency co-operation in promoting road safety awareness towards promoting the safe and enjoyable use of Powered Personal Transporters (PPT’s) and Scramblers.   The launch of this very important road safety campaign is designed towards promoting the safe use of E- Scooters and Scramblers for all.  Whilst the E- Scooter is seen as a novel mode of transport, it is vitally important that owners and users are keenly aware of the legal requirements to ensure the safe use of this mode of transport on public roadways.  Scramblers are not for use on roads or public spaces and will be seized if in breach of Road Traffic Legislation.
