Regeneration of the Existing Structures

Regeneration of the Existing Structures

All conservation work will be guided by the principle of minimum intervention as set out in the Burra Charter – as little as possible, but as much as is necessary. The planned development will bring seven existing buildings into use. Each proposed use in the existing buildings has been chosen to suit the physical constraints and opportunities of the historic fabric.

This means that minimal interventions are required, and future compatible uses can be accommodated with few, if any, changes. The oldest and most significant existing buildings are located in the two courtyards closest to Rathfarnham Castle, including Cromwell’s Fort. The uses for these buildings were chosen to have minimal impact on the protected structures.

Multi-purpose event spaces, cultural/arts spaces, local and sustainability-focused retail, and an informal food outlet, as well as accessible public toilets are proposed.
