Uisce Éireann and SDCC to co-deliver leakage reduction and flood prevention works in Newcastle
Uisce Éireann and South Dublin County Council (SDCC) are jointly delivering water main replacement and surface water pipeline installation projects along R405 Hazelhatch Road.
Together, these projects will eliminate existing leaks, reduce instances of bursts, prevent flooding events and ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area. Additionally, the delivery of the projects will provide sufficient capacity in the network to cater for existing and future development in Celbridge and Newcastle, including the facilitation of new housing.
The Uisce Éireann works, which commenced in Celbridge in October 2025, involve the replacement of 5.25km of water main between Celbridge, Co Kildare and Newcastle, Co Dublin. So far, 850 metres of water main has been replaced. The SDCC works involve the installation of 2.5km of surface water pipeline from Newcastle to Hazelhatch and the installation of four communications ducts.
Uisce Éireann’s Nicola Butler is pleased with the progress of the works to date and to be working in tandem with SDCC. “We are excited by the multiple benefits that the co-delivery of these works will bring. By working in partnership with SDCC, we are able to reduce disruption for the community and install three utilities at once. The synergy between two public bodies that is on display here is a particularly pleasing aspect of this phase of the project.”
To safely and efficiently deliver these projects, a road closure from the junction of R405 Hazelhatch Road with Loughtown Road and the junction of R405 Hazelhatch Road with Athgoe Road will be in effect from Monday, 23 February until the end of August 2026. A signposted diversion will be in place and local and emergency services access will be maintained at all times.
GMC Utilities Group Ltd. are delivering these projects on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann is working to reduce leaks every day. Fixing leaks can be complicated. We have over 65,000 km of water pipes underground in Ireland – enough to circle the earth one and a half times. Most leaks aren’t visible, resulting in precious water being lost but we are making progress. Leakage levels are now at their lowest ever with water loss reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% nationally
This project is being delivered as part of Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme which continues to deliver significant benefits to communities across Ireland, including improved water quality, provision of a more resilient and sustainable water supply for customers, and considerable water savings.
