National Day of Vehicle and Driver Compliance
South Dublin County Council (SDCC) is happy to support our colleagues in An Garda Síochána (AGS) and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) on National Day of Action for Vehicle and Driver Compliance today Wednesday 21st January 2026.
As part of this National Day of Action, our colleagues at An Garda Síochána will be conducting a focused approach to Vehicle and Driver compliance, as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety education and awareness on Irish roads and reduce the risk of serious and fatal collisions.
Targeted enforcement using advanced technology will be carried out at checkpoints throughout South Dublin County Council focusing on:
• Drivers holding a valid and appropriate Driving Licence for the vehicle they are driving
• Up -to-date motor tax and valid NCT
• Valid Motor Insurance, identified using real-time data systems
• Proper Seat Belt Use for all occupants of the vehicle and reminding Drivers that they are responsible to ensure that anyone aged 17 or under is wearing the correct child restraint, failure to do so will result in 3 penalty points and a cash fine
• Driver Distraction through Mobile Phone use while driving, as you are 4 times more likely to have a collision if you use your mobile phone when driving
Mayor of South Dublin Cllr Pamela Kearns said ‘‘I am delighted to be supporting this very important Road Safety campaign along with our colleagues in An Garda Siochana and the Road Safety Authority for ‘ National Day of Action for Vehicle & Driver Compliance’ reminding the public just how important it is that when they are behind the wheel of a car or truck, they must be cognitive of the Rules of the Road and obey them at all times, to ensure the safety of all road users on Irish roads’.
Superintendent Tom Murphy Roads Policing Bureau said ‘ An Garda Siochana launched this National Day of Vehicle & Driver Compliance to highlight the dangers we all face when we get behind the wheel of either a car or a commercial vehicle on Irish Roads. We must be mindful of all the regulations that apply to the vehicle we are driving and adhere to them at all times. There will be active check points on our roads today.
Road Safety Officer at South Dublin County Council Orlaith Maguire said ‘ This National Day of Vehicle and Driver Compliance, focuses on ensuring that Drivers and Vehicles meet the required safety and legal standards for use on Irish Roads. This is crucial in protecting all road users, highlighting risky behaviours that effect all road users. This awareness campaign is hoping to reinforce and make each Driver think before they drive.
