ELection Poster Guidelines 2025
Section 19 of the Litter Pollution Act 1997, as amended, and the Electoral.Amendment) (No. 2) Act 2009 provides that erection of posters is only permitted from the date the order is made by the Minister appointing the polling day or 30 days prior to the date of the po11, whichever is the shorter period. Thereafter posters must be removed within 7 days of the polling day.
For the 2025 Irish presidential election the date that posters can be erected is Wednesday 24th September and must be removed by Friday 31st October 2025 (midnight). Accordingly, from Saturday 1st November 2025, enforcement action will betaken by SDCC where posters are observed.
Every effort should be made to have all posters/advertisements removed as quickly as possible.
The Council’s Litter Warden team will be patrolling the county and will be instructed to note the location of any remaining posters. Where candidates/political parties fail to make every reasonable effort to co-operate with the Council in this regard, Fixed Penalty Notices will be
issued, pursuant to Section 28 of the Litter Pollution Act 1997, as amended.
It is recommended that you advise all agents/volunteers, working on your behalf or on behalf of your Political Party, of the requirement to comply with the procedure outlined above. You should also advise agents/volunteers of the requirement to ensure that all cable ties are removed along with the posters. Your co-operation in this regard will be greatly appreciated
