SDCC welcomes Minister O’Brien to announce 2026 Active Travel National Funding
SDCC were delighted to welcome Minister O’Brien, the National Transport Authority (NTA) and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to the Dodder Greenway for the announcement of the Active Travel National funding for 2026 including €19,250,000 in funding for SDCC.
The Dodder Greenway is a joint project between SDCC, Dublin City Council and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council forms a strategic active travel route across south Dublin along the Dodder valley from Bohernabreena in the Dublin Mountains to Ringsend in central Dublin. The scheme is funded by the NTA through the Active Travel Investment - Cycling and Walking Programme.

The council’s Cycle South Dublin programme, which commenced in 2021, has constructed Cycle tracks and greenways across 68km of the SDCC road network and provided links to many amenities, schools and places of work for citizens in the county. In total it is intended to provide 260km of cycle track across 134km of road network by 2029.
The Active Travel schemes also include improvements to road and junctions at schools such as the Safe Routes to School programme. To date 27 schools within the county have been provided with improved road markings, crossings and street layouts.
Deputy Mayor of South Dublin, Cllr. Trevor Gilligan commented; “We’re delighted to welcome the minister to the county to announce further funding for Active Travel. South Dublin has benefited greatly from Active Travel funding, this funding is key to the Council achieving our corporate plan goal of promoting sustainable and accessible transport initiatives and to encourage a shift towards their use.
Through programmes like Cycle South Dublin, we’re transforming how our citizens can traverse around the county, making cycling, walking and wheeling safe and accessible to all. So, it's a welcome announcement that funding will continue to be available to continue this transformation.”
Since 2021, SDCC had received over €95 million in funding from the NTA and TII to deliver active travel infrastructure. We look forward to 2026 allocation to continue delivery of active travel and sustainable infrastructure.
