Could You Live With The Shame? Seatbelt Awareness Campaign

13 Mar 26

South Dublin County Council (SDCC) are delighted to launch their ‘Could You Live With The Shame'? seatbelt awareness campaign aimed at focusing on and promoting the safe use of seatbelt wearing every time you or your passengers get in the car.  We advise anyone travelling in a car, whether they are the driver of the car or travelling as a passenger to always buckle up and wear your seatbelt.

Research conducted by the RSA found that 17% of car users killed between 2020 – 2024 were not wearing a seatbelt.  All drivers should get into the practice of asking their passengers to put on their seatbelt to help reduce fatalities and serious life changing injuries on Irish roads

Did you know

  • The driver of the car is responsible to ensure anyone aged 17 or under is wearing a seatbelt
  • Rear seat passengers unbelted come through at a force of three times their own bodyweight should the car stop suddenly, seriously injuring or killing the person in the front of the car
  • 3 Penalty Points of not wearing a seatbelt
  • 120 Euro Fixed Charge notice fine

Could you live with the shame?  There are no second chances.

Mayor of South Dublin Cllr Pamela Kearns said ‘‘I am delighted to launch South Dublin County Councils Seatbelt Campaign. Every time you get behind the wheel it is your choice to protect yourself and other road users. Make the right decision, belt up and ensure all your passengers belt up too. If you are carrying precious cargo in your car, you must ensure they are in the correct child restraint. Together, we can save lives.

Road Safety Officer at South Dublin County Council Orlaith Maguire said ‘ Could you live with the shame?  This is a question we must all ask ourselves every time we get into a vehicle.   The consequences of not wearing a seatbelt can lead to fatality or serious life changing injuries.  As we approach St Patrick's Day and people will be out and about, we are asking Drivers to ensure that both they and their passengers buckle up to save lives, there are no second chance!
