World Peatlands Day 2026

World Peatlands Day 2026

World Peatlands Day is celebrated every year on the 2nd of June to raise global awareness of peatlands and peat in all their aspects. Initiated by the International Peatland Society (IPS), the date marks the approval of the first IPS statutes and was chosen to allow outdoor activities and field events in many parts of the world. The day highlights the importance of peatlands for climate, biodiversity and water, as well as the use of peat, restoration, research and responsible management. World Peatlands Day provides a global platform for sharing knowledge, experience and dialogue on peat and peatlands, bringing together science, policy and practice. To learn anything more on peatlands please visit www.peatlands.org.

SDCC understands the importance of peatlands and has held multiple events over the last year for restoring peatlands in the Dublin Mountains. One such event in 2025 was our peatland restoration efforts in Glenasmole. This event brought together volunteers who rewetted and took some other conservation steps to restore the peatlands. The tangible impact of these efforts in enhancing water quality and boosting carbon absorption will be a powerful reminder of nature-based solutions in action.

Taking part in any type of peatland restoration is a great way to take climate action but also learn and see how peatlands are so important in the fight against climate change.
