World Bee Day 2025

World Bee Day 2025

World Bee Day is taking place on the Tuesday the 20th of May. This important day is in it's eighth iteration and below are some things you can do to help support our bee's.

In Ireland, we have 21 species of bumblebee and 80 solitary bee species. Of these species, one third are facing extinction due to the loss of semi-natural habitat, such as our meadows or our native hedgerows. This is hugely problomatic as the main species facing extinction are solitary bees who are actually the workhorses of pollination.

To celebrate this important day we recommend people investigate and learn about what they can do for our bees. Here are some ideas we suggest:

  • Allow your grass to grow and go wild, allowing your lawn to go wild will in time produce the kinds of flowers that bees love.
  • Plant nectar-bearing flowers such as lungwort, comfrey, perennial wallflower, lamb's ear and so on. You can buy native flower seeds easily and affordably.
  • Try to eliminate pesticides herbicides and insecticides as these are hugely damaging to our bee's. If you need to use them only spot spray whatever item you are trying to remove from your garden.
  • Investigate the feasibility of a green roof/wall, a green roof/wall in the right area could be hugely helpful our our bees. However, remember that any green roof/wall should not be higher than the second floor as our pollinators can not really fly to that height.
