Managing Energy in SDCC
How we manage our energy use will be key in meeting our climate targets as an organisation.
In 2024, SDCC established an Energy Management Team to support the Energy Performance Officer and the Energy Officer in advancing SDCC towards achieving ISO 50001 Energy Management certification. As part of the ISO certification process, five Significant Energy Users in SDCC were identified.
In 2026 SDCC is continuing to progress IS0 50001 accreditation.
These Significant Energy Users are the top consumers of energy (both thermal and electrical) within SDCC. They account for 85.7% of our total energy consumption.
SDCC has an annual Energy Efficiency Target of 1.9%, requiring an absolute reduction in energy consumption each year. This annual target forms an important part of the Council's pathway towards achieving its overall energy efficiency target of 50% by 2030 and will be supported through the implementation of our Energy Management System, ongoing energy efficiency initiatives, and strategic decarbonisation projects across our operations.

Table 1: Significant Energy Users
To combat climate change, our Significant Energy Users present important opportunities for energy savings and performance improvements. Reducing and eliminating the carbon emissions linked to these users is a key part of the Council’s ongoing climate action efforts and will help us to achieve our climate targets.
SDCC is committed to managing energy in a responsible and efficient manner and to continually improving its energy performance. Through the implementation of ISO 50001 Energy Management principles, the Council aims to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions while supporting the delivery of its climate action objectives. See SDCC's Energy Policy Below.

SDCC has identified several strategic actions that will play a crucial role in achieving the targets of the CAP, including the continuation of the public lighting retrofit programme, the decarbonisation of our buildings with high energy demand through Energy Performance Contracts, and the decarbonisation of our fleet.

SDCC also launched new Energy Awareness Toolkits in 2025. These jargon free leaflets are designed for householders and tenants to understand their heatpumps or general ways to reduce their energy bills. Click here to access the pages for the toolkits.
