Bawnogue District Enhancement Scheme

Bawnogue District Enhancement Scheme

Bawnougue District Centre is a busy retail and community centre located on Bawnogue Road in Clondalkin. The centre which contains a variety of businesses, community facilities and a shopping centre has under gone works such as:

  • Roadways: Speed tables, carriageway resurfacing, and junction radius narrowing
  • Cycle Facilities: Installation of Sheffield bike stands
  • Pedestrian Facilities: Shared-use pavements with new block paving and street furniture, including public lighting, bins, and a chess table
  • Public Lighting: New lighting installed throughout the scheme
  • Drainage: Rain gardens to support sustainable urban drainage
  • Car Park: Reconfigured to create more pedestrian priority and green space

As part of these upgrades net zero and sustainability took a centre focus so existing paving at the shopfronts of Bawnogue Shopping Centre were reused which reduced the need for new materials and lowered embodied carbon. The scheme also incorporated native planting within the rain gardens and landscaped areas, supporting local biodiversity, improving resilience to climate conditions, and reducing long-term maintenance and water demand. Native species also enhance urban cooling and contribute to healthier, more sustainable public spaces.
