SDCC's Progress to Target
SDCC’s climate action is driven by four key targets outlined in our Climate Action Plan 2024–2029, developed in alignment with the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Act 2021 and the National Climate Action Plan.
The four targets are:
- 50% improvement in the Council’s energy efficiency by 2030, when compared to 2008.
- 51% reduction in the Council’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030, when compared to 2018.
- To make Dublin a climate resilient region, by reducing the impacts of future climate change-related events.
- To actively engage and inform our communities on climate action.
Most recent confirmed figures form the SEAI Monitoring and Reporting (M&R) database relating to our 2023 energy performance indicate that SDCC had improved its energy efficiency by 45.4%, compared to the baseline year of 2008, when adjusting for the increasing population served.
SDCC continues to make progress towards the greenhouse gas emissions target. In 2023, SDCC’s Total Final Energy Consumption was 28.45 GWh, producing 7,802 tonnes of (CO2), representing a 41.8% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. For more on what we are doing, see our Managing Energy in SDCC page.
In terms of helping to make Dublin a climate resilient region, the impacts of climate change require taking practical actions to manage risks such as those from flooding. Implementing strategies that protect and enhance our green infrastructure, promote Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) to manage surface water, and reduce flooding risks, for example, Flood Alleviation Schemes, are helping to protect communities. To see more of our work in this area, see our Increasing Flood Resilience in South Dublin Page.
As climate change demands a collective response, SDCC are collaborating with individuals, communities, and businesses through various channels to promote effective action and engagement. Visit Working with Communities, for Communities for more information.
