Sightless Cinema 2017-18 - Invitation to join

Radio drama workshop for blind and visually impaired people

at Rua Red South Dublin Arts Centre, October 2017

Artist: Ciarán Taylor theatre director-deviser from Carpet Theatre.

  • People with sight loss from South Dublin County are invited to join a radio drama workshop. No prior experience is necessary. Sightless Cinema allows anyone who joins to get involved in helping create new radio dramas, with the help of sound and drama experts. We’d love to talk to anyone interested in helping. For information, or to let us know you’d be interested contact Ciaran at or 086-3679342.
  • The radio drama workshops are due to begin Thursday 5 October 2017 (10:30am-12:30) at RUA RED South Dublin Arts Centre at the Tallaght Luas stop. This collaborative arts project is funded by South Dublin County Council Arts Office, and facilitated by NCBI Services.
  • This is the fourth year of ‘Sightless Cinema’. People who joined the other groups say they didn’t quite know what to expect, but they really benefited from getting involved. So far there have been successful public audio presentations of the plays created by members at UCD and Lighthouse cinemas.  Another is planned for Lighthouse Cinema 27 September.

The Workshops:

  • We’ll work together in a relaxed, fun way exploring how to tell stories through sound.
  • We’ll start with a series of 8 workshops. These will introduce ways of creating radio drama.
  • We’ll play with recording voices and sound effects, and real sounds from your daily life. We’ll then see how these can be put together to tell stories in sound. We’d also like you to show us how you use sound technology (phones, computers etc.), if you do.
  • We plan then to continue workshops on Thursday mornings until March/April 2018, with the aim of making recordings in a sound studio for a presentation later in 2018.
  • With your help, we’ll record some ‘Sightless Cinema’ which can be broadcast or presented for a live audience. The aim is to create pieces which come from blind people’s experience. They will appeal to a wide audience, but will be particularly rich for blind listeners.
  • If you are interested you can contact Ciarán Taylor at (086) 367 9342 or for information on the workshops. We may be able to help with transport or access. Deadline to apply for a place: Monday 18 September 2017
